Project Description

Returned Peace Corps volunteer Tappan Heher partnered with African Sky in 2007 to help his former host family rebuild their roof in Niono, Mali. In 2008, Tappan worked with African Sky to assist a woman from Niono suffering from complications due to Diabetes. Tappan worked registered his fundraiser at GiveMeaning.Org, and his family and friends quickly met his request to support his new project. In short, African Sky assisted Tappan with the delivery of funds used to medevac a woman (Kadijat Djguiba) suffering from acute Diabetic health difficulties from Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire to Bamako, Mali, where her family and Malian doctors could attend to her health and welfare.

Original email from Tappan:
Dear Friends -
Once again I'm asking for your help (after our incredible fundraising effort last May to put a roof on my adopted Mother (grandmother of 8) Amou's house in Niono, Mali, West Africa. The toll metal roof is on! And in February when I was back in Mali they'd just finished putting on new metal doors, windows, and screens. I travelled with a group from Engineers Without Borders, who are working diligently to clean up the Niono collector sanitation disaster, and we gave the family 6 WHO-approved, treated mosquito nets. The kids are growing up, and all are healthy and happy!

One very sad new development that Amour related to me in February is that Amou's sister, Iya is very seriously ill with Stage 2 Diabetes. Iya (pronounced "ee-ya"), who I haven't seen my Peace Corps days (1990-1992) moved to Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 1995 (it was a vibrant city at that time) to sell cloth, but then the terrible civil war in Ivory Coast began and she's been stuck there every since - there's little commerce, few services, and it's still violent. Her diabetes has become so grave that she had a foot amputated a couple months ago, and can't seem to get decent access to doctors or medications. Amou asked me to send her a ticket to fly back to Bamako to see doctors, and then move to Niono to be with Amou (and live in the new house). We don't know how much time she has - I spoke to her yesterday and she is very weak.

Time is of the essence and I'm still a struggling filmmaker, so I'm hoping to raise $700 as soon as possible to fly Iya to Bamako, see doctors and get medicine, and then get her via ground transportation to Niono. Iya's return to Mali will mean so much to her, to Amou and her whole family, and to me. Iya is actually the reason I met Amou - Iya was best friends with Beth Anne, the Peace Corps Volunteer I replaced in Niono in 1990. She is funny, whip-smart, witty and hard- working. At the time she was President of the Women's Association of Niono, which made soap and dyed cloth.

All the best,
Tappan Heher
