Project Description

Currently, mosquito-born disease kills nearly one million people annually on the African continent--one child every 30 seconds--and these diseases cost African economies an estimated $12 billion (Herald Tribune/Associated Press, 25 April 2007). While the World Bank, the African Union, the World Health Organization debate bringing back DDT and other strategies to reduce malaria infections and other mosquito-born disease, African Sky-Florida is raising funds to launch a campaign to distribute anti-malarial medications to community health workers and teachers in rural Mali. Frank Eager, Florida Program Director, and project director of the Anti-Malaria/ACT Campaign raised $795 in Fiscal Year 2008; African Sky is using these funds to begin the first phase of the Anti-Malaria campaign. The Anti-Malaria/ACT Campaign Fund is a restricted account held at Bank Atlantic (Jupiter, Florida).

African Sky has organized mosquito net projects in previous years, and will incorporate a bed net component to the ACT Campaign. ACT is a promising, yet widely used treatment for malaria in urban Mali (for those who have access to it). Many organizations throughout the world operate similar projects as an immediate measure against the spread of malaria; African Sky will do its own small part in this complex and multi-dimensional battle against Malaria in Africa.
