Summary

The Women's Association of the Village of Mandoli, Mali received 85,000 CFA from African Sky to purchase a Nafasoro Pump for the Women's garden in the village. The pump, 50 m of garden hose and 12 m of plastic tubing was bought by Peace Corps Volunteer Christopher Bentley in Mopti, Mali. Pump and accessories were delivered to the village and the garden where it was assembled next to the well. In addition to the Mandoli Women's garden pump, one Nafasoro pump was purchased for Jared Alden, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Gossi, in the region of Tombouktou. Alden received the pump and 35,500 CFA to purchase hose and tubing. Receipts for the two (2) Nafasoro foot pumps and for Mandoli/Bentley's hose and tubing are attached. Alden will supply receipts for hose and tubing accounting for the remaining 35,500 CFA.
The Nafasoro Pump estimate given to African Sky in the initial proposal was low. Due to a small miscommunication and an unexpected price increase the cost of the pump was 49,500 rather than 40,000 CFA. This affected the overall length of hose that was able to be purchased, 62 meters rather than 100 meters. The price of materials exceeded the allotted amount by 5,250 CFA. This was supplemented by the Women's Association and was, in my opinion, a positive action. This contribution from the Association gave the members a sense of ownership and increased the overall interest in the pump and subsequently the garden as a whole. The small amount given has basically helped increase the sustainability of the project.
A pump formation was held in October to teach the women of the association how to use and maintain the pump. The women immediately started using the pump for irrigation of sweet potato and onion plots. Currently, approximately 20 women use the garden and the pump and many more are now interested. Onions, sweet potatoes, peppers, hibiscus, lettuce and beans are now being grown in the garden and the Nafasoro pump has made this process easier and increased the amount of crops that are able to be grown. The rainy season has ended and pump is essential for dry season crop success. The women and village are very excited about the new addition to the garden and looking forward to the prospect of possible small income generation by selling produce in the nearby markets. An abundance of local fresh vegetables will also benefit the overall health of the community, filling an often neglected part of the diet here.
