Community Health
African Sky's Community Health service program confronts critical health issues that undermine local food production, socioeconomic security, and ecological sustainability. Because we are a small, people-to-people organization we focus on health issues that impact broad segments of rural farm communities (e.g. malaria and access to clean drinking water). Our Community Health is African Sky's newest program, but it will become a critical component to our "10 for 2010" school construction project; we are developing an exciting new program for our sponsored schools to promote "nutrition for learning and health", "preventative health practices", and "access to malaria treatment".
Community Health Projects
Community Pharmacy
An annual project that supplies remote villages with basic pharmaceutical supplies (e.g. aspirin, vitamins, bandages, antibiotic cream)
Bed Nets
Nets are supplied to village elders and leaders to distribute among pregnant and nursing mothers to prevent malaria infections among these susceptible populations.
Jigiya
Africa Sky partners with Jigiya to support Malians with disabilities. Jigiya is a self-advocacy organization made up of Malians with physical and/or mental disabilities. African Sky invests in Jigiya because its leaders and members have already taught us how great things are possible through their community-based approach to development, self-advocacy, and physical and mental health.
Clean Drinking Water
African Sky is working with University of California-Santa Barbara's Engineers Without Borders to develop a preventative maintenance and reconstruction program for the manual water pumps which are the sole source of clean drinking water for most Malian villages.
