Food Security
African Sky collaborates with farming communities throughout Mali to work toward greater food security despite regional challenges to agricultural production (e.g. low and erratic rainfall, endemic poverty, fatigued fields). The families in these communities depend on the crops they grow for their annual food supply. Declining and variable rainfall, as well as difficult soils, challenge scientists as well as the highly skilled farmers who work tirelessly to feed their families. African Sky assists community elders and leaders to establish and finance strategies that safeguard community farming resources and food supplies. Elders also manage emergency assistance funds for families in crisis. African Sky is dedicated to working within local ecological and cultural systems to promote sustainable food production, striving to bridge the rich heritage and knowledge of farmers with ideas and resources from scientists and other specialists.
Food Security Projects
Crisis Funds
Elders in some of our host communities manage emergency assistance funds and food to families facing critical breakdowns in household food production.
Cereal Banks
A cereal bank is a community effort in which a village collective buys local grain at fair prices for the purpose of re-selling within the community during the hungry-season before harvest. Community-owned cereal banks can earn modest profits while offering cereals at reasonable rates in contrast with volatile cereal markets and escalating prices during the hungry season.
Regional Food Systems
African Sky assists farmers, farmer organizations, and scientists to bolster regional food and farm systems.
Micro Loans
African Sky is working with two Malian communities to test and implement a community-based cooperative program to extend short-term farm credit to rural households (who are members of the cooperative).
