Education
African Sky promotes universal access to primary education in rural Mali. In Mali, we build rural primary schools, provide financial resources for rural teachers and schools, and we sponsor annual adult literacy and numeracy programs. Currently we are developing regionally appropriate and culturally relevant texts for rural Malian primary schools, starting with first grade math and reading books. We also visit US schools to provide free educational programs on African cultures, anthropology, and the value of service and international understanding. Our most popular US schools program connects students in the US with their peers in Mali. African Sky facilitates art exchanges between US and Malian students; before receiving art from a friend in Mali, US students typically draw pictures and send them with donated crayons to Mali via African Sky.
Education Projects
"10 Schools for 2010"
African Sky is building ten schools by the year 2010 in rural Mali. Once built African Sky will work with project communities to support all ten sponsored, teaching aids, educational materials, physical educational equipment, supplemental teacher salaries, and school maintenance funds.
Adult Literacy & Numeracy Programs
Adults educational programs are offered in Bamanakan, a West African language.
School Investment and Improvement Funds
Funds are provided for educational projects and programs initiated by community leaders and village elders including the need school improvements and maintenance.
Supplemental Teachers Salaries
African Sky works with community leaders to supplement the funds needed to acquire teachers in remote rural areas.
Operation School Bag
Basic school supplies, physical education equipment, and teaching materials are supplied annually for every student and teacher in our sponsored schools.
Cultural Programs
African Sky offers educational programs to schools in Mali and the US including exchange programs between schools and students and presentations that expose students to new cultures and global perspectives.
