Community Arts
Our Community Arts program supports innovation in and documentation of traditional Malian music, drumming, performance arts, and specialized trades such as blacksmiths and weavers. We also promote community groups and activities which enhance social cohesion and socioeconomic equality. These varied art forms and organizations contribute to community development, identity, and solidarity. We have worked with musicians, tailors, weavers, blacksmiths, a self-taught electrical engineer, several women's groups, and more. Check out our videos section to see some of the performers and artists with who African Sky has worked.
Community Arts Projects
Community Groups and Activities
African Sky provides support to groups and activities which enhance social cohesion, socioeconomic equality, and community development (e.g. youth soccer, tailors, community radio, women's business collaborative, regional youth associations, gender and development camp for girls).
Community Arts Video Shorts
African Sky is producing a video series of community arts video shorts exploring Malian arts and traditional skills (e.g. rural Malian music and performances, iron working, weaving, apiculture, and house production).
Youth Soccer Tournament
African Sky sponsors an annual soccer tournament in southern Mali. Teams from the Kokele and Sido area (Bougouni, Mali) compete for a cash prize. Recently we provided modest uniforms, officiating equipment, soccer balls, and new, durable nets for the tournament (and regular use); All of the players in the 2008 tournament were excellent players, but most of them had never played soccer with actual nets.
