African Sky manages four programs in service of our mission to promote international understanding and to mutually confront some of the devastating effects of endemic poverty and inequality. Our programs focus on education, community health, food security, and community arts. Individual project reports and documentation follow the four program summaries below.

Education

African Sky promotes univeral access to primary education in rural Mali. We also operate adult literacy and numeracy courses in Bamanakan, a West African language. Our primary school and adult education programs now include the development of appropriate educational texts for rural Malian villages. Our flagship education project is our "Ten Schools for 2010" campaign; we are working with Malian communities and govenment agencies to build 10 village schools for the year 2010. In addition, African Sky presents educational and cultural programs for schools and community groups in the U.S. and Mali.

Food Security

African Sky assists farmers, farmer organizations, and scientists working to sustainably bolster regional food production despite regional challenges to agricultural production such as low and erratic rainfall. One long-standing example of our "local" approach to food security is the creation of community cereal banks. Through cereal banks, farming families can avoid the volatile local cereal market; grain prices typically double during the annual, pre-harvest "hungry" season. At the discretion of, and upon request by community elders and leaders, African Sky provides emergency assistance to farm families facing critical breakdowns in household food production.

Community Health

In 2006, African Sky launched our Community Health program to confront critical health issues that undermine local food production, socioeconomic security, and ecological sustainability. We focus on issues that impact a broad segment of rural farm communities, such as malaria and access to clean drinking water. In 2007, African Sky distributed bed nets for pregnant and nursing mothers to prevent malaria infections in these susceptible populations. We recently joined hands with Jigiya, an organization of Malians with disabilities, to invest in this group's community based approach to development, self-advocacy, and physical and mental health.

Community Arts

African Sky supports innovation in and preservation of traditional Malian music, drumming, performance, arts, and trade knowledge. We also support community groups and activities which promote social cohesion, socio-economic equity, and community development. Over the past year, African Sky worked with tailors, youth soccer teams, community radio, and a women's business collective seeking support for a proposed soap-making enterprise.

The African Sky Kenya Project

African Sky Kenya aims to have a long-lasting, positive impact in the communities in which we will work. We hope to expand our Kajulu Schools program to include the construction of separate girl’s and boy’s bathrooms, the provision of sanitary napkins for girls that have reached puberty, and the creation of a school garden to supplement our school lunch program. We also hope to support or construct a Women’s Center where vocational skills can be learned and shared. Most importantly, we look forward to building friendships through which we will create new solutions to fulfill the potential of Kenyans.

The Mande Sessions: A Documentary Film

African Sky is working with former Peace Corps volunteer Adam Klein, the prodcer and singer/songwriter of “The Mande Sessions: A Documentary Film.” Klein’s film documents the production and recording of an exciting ten song CD composed by Klein with a range of well-known Malian musical artists. African Sky is helping Klein raise awareness and for the Mande Sessions film. In addition, we are assisting Klein in his search for additional sponsors for this film.

Little Eagles Football League

In an effort to continue African Sky's mission to build friendships between the US and Malian communities, "Les Petits Aigles Ligue du Football" (The Little Eagles Football League) aims to promote learning outside the classroom through a youth soccer league that would include, at its core, education and sports programming for boys and girls in the community.
